Péter Nádas appeared at a very young age (in 1967) with his mature short novel, The Bible. This volume is the first in the series of Helikon Pocket Books, which is the work of a contemporary Hungarian author who is alive today.

The Bible is a summary of the experiences of the first major period of life, childhood, although it has no autobiographical aspects. Its main character is a boy who, as a part of an environment that has lost its morals, realizes how opaquely complicated and false it is, how easily things that are pure, good and simple are defiled here; and tries with a hideous effort to cut the threads of lies around him.

I tried to recall his body, but all I could think of was his whining, vulnerable gaze.
