He wants to make up for the old joke that went wrong with another, equally cruel joke. However, the joke backfires again, again against him. And this will become the actual joke, bigger than all human jokes, impenetrable and irrevocable, the titular joke, which used to make its fool of its victims towards us in the image of history. It tells about this in a disturbing and sarcastic way, with the twisting story of its upheavals, the Kundera masterpiece that once caused a worldwide "scandal" and later became a timeless classic in worldwide success.
