Szent Péter's Umbrella is a short novel by the Hungarian writer Kálmán Mikszáth, built around a carefully crafted anecdote. At its heart is an wealthy and eccentric gentleman who wants to pass his fortune to his beloved adopted son, bypassing his legitimate heirs. The story's central motif is an umbrella with a treasure hidden inside its handle.
Although the treasure eventually disappears, the novel ends not in tragedy but in happiness. Mikszáth's characteristic humour and sharp understanding of people portray rural Hungarian life and human passions.
The book's message is that life's greatest treasure is not material wealth but love. This paperback edition, published in 2017, has a glued binding and weighs 150 g.
