Mátyás Flórián (Felsődetrehem, May 3, 1818 – Pécs, April 2, 1904) Hungarian historian, linguist, source critic, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He acquired his extensive historical and linguistic knowledge in a self-taught manner. In 1838 he taught at the Piarist high school in Ragusa and in 1842 he obtained a law degree. He settled and lived in Pécs from the 1850s. From January 24, 1859 to 1861, he worked as a Latin-Greek and literature teacher at the Roman Catholic high school in Pécs. After that, he dedicated his time exclusively to his scientific research. On December 15, 1858, he became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, then on May 6, 1898, he became a regular member. He was engaged in publishing and analyzing medieval source texts. His articles were published in Hungarian Linguistics, the Academic Bulletin, the Centuries, the Egyetemes Philologiai Közlöny and the Katholikus Szemle and in foreign journals.
