In the continuation of Mära Zälite's novel Five Fingers, we get a glimpse into the childhood of Laura, who has grown to ten years old. The little girl who returned home from Siberia with her parents is already in school, but the world around her has not changed: Latvia is living through the false and contradictory period of the Soviet occupation. The legendary figures of the previous novel appear: the half-mad Karlis, St. Péter, who plays forbidden tunes on his trombone, the cunning Liepa who acts for the sake of survival, and Mamó, who says goodbye to life. But new and colorful characters also appear, such as Dada, the dead mother of a Soviet hero. Zälite brings all this to life with the same strange mosaic technique as the Five Fingers, enchanting his readers with his lyrical twists and beautiful language.
