How much can the family forgive?
Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope, two new New York police officers, settle down with their families in a nice suburb next door to each other. The events behind the closed doors of the two houses - the loneliness of Francis's wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian's wife, Anne - create the opportunity for the tragedy that erupts between the two families and its consequences that last for decades.
Francis and Lena's daughter, Kate, and Brian and Anne's son, Peter, develop a deep friendship, which then develops into love. Events tear them apart, but childhood memories inevitably bring them back to each other. Their love is tested again and again by the disapproval of family members, the difficulties of everyday life and the shadows of the past. Will love, care and loyalty be enough to free them from the burdens inherited and acquired?
