In the fall of 1880, five babies are found in the Little Tulip Orphanage in very unusual circumstances. They are Adele, Ludvig, Ánizs, Kornelis and Milou. The deceitful and heartless caretaker calls the children "unadoptable", but they are fully aware that it is their unusual individuality that makes them special. They decide that if they break, if they are torn apart, they will stay together. When an evil, underworld figure tries them to get into its clutches, the orphans band together and start a daring escape through the frozen canals of Amsterdam. They get involved in many adventures and manage to get each other out of many trouble. And it is possible that they will even manage to find a real home and a real family in the process.
