Fourteen-year-old Aurora Jackson went on a party camping trip with her sister and her friends. After a night of adolescent drinking, the youngsters found Aurora's sleeping bag empty. Where could their sixth companion, the youngest girl, have gone? Who last saw him? Was he forced or did he leave the camp of his own free will? Maybe you got lost? Is someone responsible for her disappearance?
Almost thirty years later, Inspector Jonah Sheens is tasked with investigating human remains found in the woods. It soon turns out that the long-lost Aurora Jackson has been found, as much as is left of her. The inspector interrogates the five now middle-aged adults whom he knows from school, although he was never closely involved in the branch. The more you listen to them, the more well-founded your suspicion becomes that three decades ago they weren't telling the whole truth, and not everyone was being honest. They didn't want to admit that they drank a lot of alcohol as teenagers and that there was sex involved? Or was a much greater crime concealed?
The story, which runs on two threads, takes place in two times and is masterfully told, and maintains the tension throughout, slowly reveals what led to Aurora's death. And also how much the former youth have changed. Are they still such close friends today? Who among them is lying?
