The Chinese invented and the Byzantines used the ``Greek fire'' with great success. After the medieval age of stone-throwing machines, the invention of gunpowder brought about a revolutionary change in the life of the artillery of that time. In addition to the cannons that fired stone and then iron balls, handguns also appeared. on land and at sea.
