    The leaf contains flavonoids (quercetin glycosides), traces of essential oil (sesquiterpene peroxides, triterpene derivatives), potassium salts and ascorbic acid. Birch leaf tea is an excellent diuretic, blood purifier and anti-inflammatory, but it is also known for its antispasmodic and antiseptic effects. It is used in milder infectious urinary tract diseases, to prevent the formation of kidney stones and kidney sand, and against rheumatism. In folk medicine, the sap of young trees was used to induce urination.
