Emil Coué's face smiles at us from this picture, as he stood in front of my little Kodak camera with a friendly, typically French-cut, jovial face this summer, under the beautiful pine trees of his garden in Nancy. I sought to get to know him personally, I had several reasons; the most important of which is that in the years following the World War, I learned about him through the fast-moving news of the daily newspapers, something that became my firm conviction through the many daily experiences of my medical practice and which, however, directly contradicted the basic understanding of medicine taught at domestic universities. This "newly discovered basic premise of mine" was that the soul, or let's say, the spiritual factors, have such an important role in human life that they are not only, as has been recognized up until now, the so-called "functional" ) or, as they say popularly, they can influence, and even always influence, mental problems arising from nervousness and especially "imagination", but also changes and physical diseases that undoubtedly have a physical (organic) basis! When in this country, deafening silences and even sharp personal attacks were the "counter-arguments" of practical results in this direction, I started visiting the neurology clinics and psychiatric hospitals in Austria and Germany.
