The first stone bridge version of Tower Bridge was built in 1176. In 1831, this stone bridge was demolished to replace it with a much more elegant, classic bridge. Unfortunately, the elegant bridge could not withstand the load enough, so it was demolished in 1967 and the current bridge was erected in its place. Tower Bridge is over 30 meters wide and is the only bridge in London that can be raised to allow ships to pass under it.
