The Latimer sisters - two sets of twins - are as close as siblings can get. But all four bright young women have their own dreams: Edda wants to be a doctor, Grace wants to get married, Rika never wants to get married, and Kitty wants people to stop judging her by her beauty. Although they are famous throughout New South Wales for their beauty, wit and ambition, in the early 1920s life offers them very limited opportunities, so they decide to embark on a new type of nursing training that opens up previously unattainable paths for women . Immersed in the spartan life of the hospital and the hard work, all four girls have to decide about love, career and what is most important to them. The result is sometimes happiness, sometimes heart-wrenching pain - bittersweet life itself.
