Maria Montessori was born in 1870 and was the first woman in Italy to obtain a medical degree. As a young doctor, Montessori worked in a children's ward, where she realized that disabled children can be developed much better with proper pedagogy than with drugs. Her methods were well ahead of their time, so much so that even today countless toys are made based on Montessori's theory.
