Iván Szelényi is one of the defining and internationally best-known figures of the last fifty years of Hungarian sociology. He belongs to the generation of sociologists that is led by the need to theorize beyond the exploration of social facts and the search for connections drawn from them. He does not stick to a strict empirical approach, but strives to formulate his claims in at least a medium-level theoretical framework. All this in an innovative and provocative way. Contrary to popular belief, facts do not speak for themselves, they must be interpreted in context, and then - if possible - taken out of context and made part of sociological theorizing. In his most important works, Szelényi was always able to formulate astonishing questions or strong statements that challenged the professional consensus. The flurry of Szelényi's reception on the one hand continuously maintained interest in the author's work, and on the other hand, it also confirmed the author's ironic relationship, which is not alien to his creation, both regarding the acceptance of his works and the validity of comprehensive social explanations. There is no other author in the history of Hungarian sociology who has written more self-critical reflections on his own previous work than he. However, in each case, these writings brought with them the further consideration of the given topic, the placing of previous claims in a new context, and thus the continuation of the scientific discourse. The authors of this volume relate to the questions of Szelényi's oeuvre, interpret them, criticize them and think about them further.
