Mother Holle and Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and King Thrush, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, Big Brother and Little Sister, Frog King and Vashenrik - who doesn't know the good and evil heroes of Grimm's fairy tales, fairies disguised in animal skins, enchanted kings, earthlings in league with the devil and bewitched princesses? Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm started collecting German folktales at the beginning of the 19th century, expanded, edited, combed and arranged the material for decades, until the "definitive" collection of two hundred tales, the "Children's and Family Tales" - Family Tales in short. Genius is perhaps only a matter of diligence, Goethe testified - and indeed, this most popular, published and translated into the most languages of the world's foundational work owes its unparalleled success to the brothers' diligence in collecting and editing, and to the wealth and diversity of genres created as a result of their diligent work. All types of fairy tales can be found in this collection, from rhymes with a few lines, trufs and jokes, to funny and sad animal tales and parables to longer, epic narratives - so there is no doubt that every reader who loves fairy tales will find something to their liking and taste.
The first complete edition of Family Tales was published in Hungarian thirty-three years ago - and the current, improved and revised edition also includes the ten children's legends that the Brothers Grimm added to the tales for the first time.
