Chia seeds are the edible seeds of Salvia hispanica, a flowering plant of the mint family native to central and southern Mexico, or the related Salvia columbariae found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Chia seeds can absorb one and a half to two times their own weight in liquid, after which they become jelly-like. You can even eat chia seeds on their own. Chia seed has an energizing effect, so it is worth starting the day with it. Crushing 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds provides the energy intake in the morning. It can also be used to prepare puddings, smoothies and meals.
