Szomory György - Kis Hungarian zenetörténet

In the past, when people hit two stones together, they drilled a hole in the inside of a thicker branch and blew into it - every time they marveled at the resulting sound. He was infinitely happy about it, and thought: these wonderful voices
even the gods listen with pleasure. When he discovered his own voice, his joy - and of course that of the gods! - to its peak
stepped on. He experienced how different it is when someone whistles, strums, and drums next to him, and another one next to him, and how different it is when they don't just sing to themselves. Over the millennia, all of this has been supplemented with a different kind of experience: what used to be a sacrificial ceremony and magic is now a concert or an opera performance; or "only" music listened to from the radio or CD. We know that we get closer to the miracle if we get to know and study the musical art of thousands of years. As a first step, we would do well to look around ourselves, to review what our narrow community has created so far, so that we can learn about its place in the world of music.

The book Little Hungarian Music History - published in the cultural history series of Holnap Kiadó - does not only offer useful information about the history of Hungarian music. The author asks and persuades the reader: when you reach the end, put the book aside, even forget its contents for a while, and listen to a lot of music, as much noble music as possible with an open heart!
