Product description
Gábor T. Szántó's novel is about the dictatorship and the Jewish crossroads of the twentieth century.
The story of Benjámin Friedmann and his interrogator, György Benedek, a state defense officer who was tortured to the end, is at the center of the plot, which took place during the Rajk trial in 1949. In the background of their struggle, the fate of their women is also upset by the male world of politics.
Crumbling lives and families: communists growing in power, Zionists waiting to emigrate, Pest citizens who have lost their ground, banned writers, merchants on Garay Square, survivors who are afraid of informers, who cling to their faith or who have abandoned their faith appear in the pages of the novel.
The author explores the drivers of inhumanity, despair and compromise in a way that maintains his objectivity throughout. The goal of his introspection-inducing accounting is not judgment fueled by passion, but rather understanding how any dictatorship mercilessly grinds down everything and everyone - both victims and criminals - in the end.
The second, revised edition of the novel is now in the hands of readers.
