Product description
On a perfectly normal, beautiful autumn day, the peaceful small town of Chester's Mill in Maine is suddenly shut off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field out of the blue. An airplane crashes into the suddenly descending "storm" and falls from the sky in flaming wreckage, a woman gardening has her hand cut off, people working in the neighboring town cannot get home. No one understands what this inexplicable phenomenon is, where it came from, and when it will disappear, if at all. Then, as people slowly realize that the invisible but very real obstacle is there and will stay there, it also turns out for them that Chester's Mill is not such a peaceful place.
Dale Barbara, an Iraq veteran stranded in the city and occasional cook, finds himself in the middle of the events. Along with some intrepid residents - local newspaper owner Julia Shumway, two pastors, a hospital assistant, a mother and three brave children - he is forced to confront the town's new leader, Big Jim Rennie, who will not even shy away from murder in order to hold the reins. Meanwhile, the politician's violent son keeps terrible secrets in a dark chamber of a house. But there is no way to escape the city, and time and air are running out...
