The latest technology is capable of incredible data processing speed
The new version of the 24.2 megapixel4 Exmor R CMOS sensor is now back-illuminated and comes with the latest BIONZ X image processing engine and user LSI. Higher resolution and data readout speed
The camera's 35mm Full Frame CMOS image sensor is a back-illuminated structure that collects light more efficiently, expands circuit scalability, and transfers data faster thanks to copper wires, while minimizing noise to enhance detail in each image.

Up to 1.5 stops of improvement in image quality
The normal ISO range has been expanded to ISO 100 - ISO 51,200 (for still images it can be extended to ISO 50 - ISO 204,800), detail reproduction and area-specific noise reduction technology preserve the richness of detail in images and filter out noise. You can shoot at high ISO sensitivities without worrying about noise or image quality degradation.

Up to approx. 15 levels of dynamic range
Approximately 15 stops of dynamic range at low sensitivity settings thanks to a retuned CMOS sensor and image processor that achieve a smooth transition from shadows to highlights for more creative images. (Under Sony test conditions.)

More accurate color reproduction straight from the camera
The color rendering performance has been improved by leaps and bounds, so subjects are captured with more natural, realistic colors. Thanks to this, the skin tone of the portraits, the blue of the sky in the landscapes and the bright shades of the still lifes all look especially true to life.

4D FOCUS - improved AF performance
AF performance has been improved with AF improvements carried over to the α9 and optimally applied, so that when the α7 III finds an unpredictably moving subject, such as a dancer in motion, a boxer or a wild animal, it won't lose it easily.

693. Extremely many phase detection AF points
This camera uses 693 phase-detection AF points, with which the image area is approx. 93% coverage and 425 densely spaced contrast-sensing AF points for better focusing performance.

Up to 2x speed AF
By combining focal-plane phase-detection AF for speed and precise contrast-detection AF, Sony's sophisticated Fast Hybrid AF system can capture fast-moving subjects in sharp images. This system achieves twice the AF speed. (Compared to α7 II in low light. Sony test conditions.)

Advanced AF tracking for fast-moving subjects
The AF performance inherited from the α9 system is responsible for the increased precision achieved when shooting fast bursts of events. Thanks to the faster image sensor data reading, even the most complex moving subject can be tracked, and sudden movements of the subject can be predicted with high precision.

Eye AF revolutionizes portrait photography
On the α7 III, Eye AF can also be used in AF-C mode for fast, effective eye detection/tracking when shooting stills. Optimum focus can be easily maintained even on moving subjects, which can completely transform the world of portraiture.

Focus control on touch screen
The α7 III's toolbox includes Touch Focus and the Touch Pad function - with which you can move the focus frame with your fingertip while using the viewfinder.

AF in the focus magnifier
Autofocus when zooming in or out of the focus area in the viewfinder/monitor, the view can be zoomed in after autofocus. Ideal for focusing on smaller areas and for photography that requires precise focus performance.
