Shelly i4 GEN3 is a special product of the smart home manufacturer, it was released in 2024 and is the successor of Shelly Plus i4. Shelly i4 GEN3 is recommended by the manufacturer for installation behind traditional wall switches. It does not have a device relay, but it can manage the status of up to 4 switches or other input / control devices, and based on that it can control other Shelly relays, sensors or other devices controlled by HTTP/HTTPS, MQTT or CoAP.

Essentially, it is used to wirelessly "link" a switch to devices connected to Shelly relays elsewhere in our home (or even installed elsewhere). By mounting the Shelly i4 Gen3 behind the switch(es), it detects the change in the state of the switches and can send a switching command via WiFi to Shelly PLUS, PRO or Shelly GEN3 relays, even controlling several in a group with one switch. It can therefore be used in pairs with a Shelly smart relay in cases where phase and neutral wires are available at both the switch and the lamp, but the two are far from each other, or the wiring between the two is simply missing.

It can receive the signals of up to 4 connected physical switches (two-position or rocker) and connect up to 4 types of events to each of them, so it can issue a total of 16 commands. Different commands can be assigned to the various switching methods in the Scene function, but with DDD control between devices, you can also call other devices from a URL and send them a command. Shelly i4 GEN3 can therefore also be used for scene control from a physical wall switch.

Like other Shelly devices, the i4 GEN3 does not require a hub or gateway to operate, the device is connected directly to the WiFi router.

With its help, for example, we can program the switching on/off of our devices in other places for various switching methods (e.g. double button press) of one of our wall switches, for example, switching on lights, controlling blinds, etc., or with the "Scenes" function of Shelly Smart Control, we can even start the control of several devices (even delayed compared to each other).

For example, a single switch next to the bed can be programmed to turn off the bedroom light at the press of a button, to turn off all the lights in the home at the press of a double button, and to lower the blinds at the press of three buttons. Or we can create an "I left home" button next to the front door, which will turn off all the Shelly-controlled lights, close the blinds, and turn off the iron.

It can also be used to monitor, for example, with a Shelly i4 GEN3, whether a small circuit breaker has not been switched off (and whether there is current in the circuit), but also whether there is current in a specific controlled circuit, and in the Shelly Smart Control app you can set rules for the position of the switches / current flowing/not flowing in the circuit, e.g. we can turn on/off other Shelly WiFi relays with wireless control via WiFi.

OUTER COVER:

Shelly i4 GEN3 has the same dimensions as its predecessor, so the usual DIN adapters can also be used for GEN3 relays. It also contains wiring diagrams so that it can be connected simply and clearly.

BLUETOOTH PAIRING:

The new Shelly Smart Control app is required for pairing, it is not compatible with the old Shelly Cloud app. It is paired with the usual speed of the Shelly Plus i4 thanks to the built-in Bluetooth chip.

STRONGER PROCESSOR, MORE FUNCTIONS:

Instead of the ESP32 processor found in the Shelly Plus i4, the GEN3 products have an ESP-Shelly-C38F processor, which contains an even faster and more powerful CPU and twice as much memory, 8MB, thus offering improved functions and faster operation in the PLUS product line.

The Shelly i4 GEN3 requires a constant 110-240V AC power supply to operate.

It expects the same voltage at its four switch inputs and

- detects whether the given switch is on/off,
- or if it is not used for a switch, it detects whether there is current in the given circuit.

Just like the Plus i4, the i4 GEN3 is also compatible with the four-button "scene control" switch of Shelly's new light switch family, by clicking on the back of it, you can easily create commands to control other devices (either group or scene-based) in the Shelly system.

(The four-button wall switch is not an accessory of the Shelly Plus i4, but a product that can be ordered separately.)
