Sánta Ferenc - Az fifth seal

In the story, which takes place during the time of the Sagittarian Empire - which was also made into a great film directed by Zoltán Fábri - a group of four friends gathers, as usual, for a little evening wine and exchange of ideas.
That day, the company expands to five people, and in addition to the discussion of trivial daily matters, a serious philosophical question is also put on the table: if you could decide for yourself whether, after your death, you would live in the body of a rich but cruel and tyrannical ruler or a humiliated, crippled but conscientious slave if they could be born again, which one would they vote for? The question preoccupies them even after their return home, and their fate turns out to be such that soon they really have to choose between a clear conscience and freedom, even though the former means death and the latter means humiliation. Is it more difficult to die with a pure heart, or - because of the responsibility you have already assumed for others - to live on broken?
How would we act in a similar situation? After all, "we are all tied to other people's lives, and we cannot decide according to our hearts!"
"When he broke the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the word of God and for their testimony."
