Product description
Besides the thousand wonders of our country, it is also the land of castle ruins. Thousands of once-proud castles stood in historical Hungary, hundreds were endangered due to our stormy history, and at least as many were razed to the ground. The book commemorates destroyed and ruined castles with pictures of at least a hundred former Hungarian noble residences and hundreds of mentions from the territory of historical Hungary. It takes into account the construction history of former mansions and introduces us to their former owners.
The destruction of castles is often a crime story, the exact details of which have not been clarified over time. To this day, we do not know how and why the former Habsburg castle in Alcút, the building designed by Mihály Pollack, caught fire and was one of the most important classicist private buildings in our country. At the time of the tragedy, there was also speculation as to who set fire to the centuries-old wooden structure of the Esterházy Castle in Réde, whose wooden shingles were preserved with great care by its former owner, Count Pál Esterházy, out of respect for the Baroque building.
