Product description
BASED ON A TRUE STORY
Franciscan monk Anton is forced to renounce his role in the world when the Nazis invade the school where he teaches. He moves to a German village to make a marriage of convenience with the widowed Elisabeth and help raise her three children. The man wants to do penance with this, after he was unable to protect his students from the wrath of the Nazis. As Anton tries to live up to his role as a husband and father, he learns of the Red Band, whose secret dissidents are planning to assassinate Hitler. Although Elisabeth has reservations about the network, Anton joins the shadow army. But when the SS finds out about the plot, Anton decides to take one last step, which may cost him his life, and say goodbye to the family, which in the meantime he has closed in his heart even more than expected.
"A heartbreaking introspection, presented through the struggle of a man trying to come to terms with his past. A beautifully written story about the cruel alternatives that even good people are often forced to choose."
- Gemma Liviero, author of The Road Through the Ruins and In the Field of Blue
