Nora Roberts - Night work

New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts introduces an unforgettable thief in her suspenseful new novel of greed, love, and survival...

Harry Booth began stealing at the age of nine to keep a roof over his sick mother's head. At night, he would sneak into luxurious, empty houses in search of items to exchange for cash. When his mother finally succumbs to cancer, Harry leaves Chicago, but continues his nocturnal activities.
He wanders from the Outer Banks to Savannah to New Orleans, taking on a new identity while remaining cautious, alert, and distant. You can't afford to make a splash...or get attached to someone. However, his guard is let down when he meets Miranda Emerson, but the strong bond between the two cannot last because not all thieves follow Harry's code of honor. Some people pay others to take the risk so that they themselves can accumulate even more wealth. Some are driven by the desire to own people as they own paintings and jewelry. And after Harry takes a lucrative job on behalf of Carter LaPorte, LaPorte sees an asset he can use and decides he wants to own Harry.
The man is a predator, even more terrifying than the alligators that haunt the swamp, and when he forces Harry to rob a museum in Baltimore, Harry abandons Miranda - cruelly, without explanation - and disappears. But no matter what name he uses or where he goes, LaPorte casts a shadow over his life. To be truly free, you must face your enemy once and for all. That's the only way you can hope to end up with something more valuable than anything you've ever stolen...
