Ambitious New York teenager Craig Gilner is determined to succeed in life - which means getting into the right high school, the right college, the right job. But once Craig is accepted into Manhattan's Executive High School, the pressure becomes unbearable. He doesn't eat, he doesn't sleep, until, one night, he almost kills himself.
Craig, due to his suicide attempt, is referred to a psychiatric hospital, where he acquires unusual new neighbors: a transsexual sex addict; a girl who fell in the face with scissors; and the self-elected President Armelio. Here, Craig is finally able to face the source of his anxiety.
Ned Vizzini, who himself has been to psychiatry, wrote a particularly moving story about the sometimes unexpected path to happiness.
