"On the way back, they gave me an ultimatum: if I want to save my skin, I have to lead them to Májsay's location. They took me back to the Margit boulevard and beat me to death. The leader of the interrogation, First Lieutenant Dr. Balassa Bálint, then decided that the investigation was over, there was no there's no point in wasting my time any longer. He appointed himself as the prosecutor, the gendarmes involved as the court, and the death sentence was pronounced. They pushed me into a chair and took me up to my cell on the third floor, because I couldn't walk, I couldn't even stand..."
János Horváth had a fascinating career. From Cece, a rural village of only 2,500 enthusiasts, to Budapest. In 1944, he was imprisoned by the Gestapo as a member of the student resistance movement, and later, dressed as a priest, he escaped from snipers on the streets of Budapest. In the 1945 elections - in Angyalföld - he defeated János Kádár as a candidate for the Small Farmers' Party, but in 1947 - as a member of the Hungarian Brotherhood - he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison in the so-called Mistéth trial on trumped-up charges. In October 1956, he participated in the establishment of the economic government as a member of the Hungarian Revolutionary Economic Council, but after the return of the Soviets, he first fled to Vienna and then to the United States. Here, he joins science for good and begins his decades-long academic career as a university professor... By reading his autobiography, we can walk along this almost hundred-year-long, rich life journey with him.
