II. For millions of people in Britain and around the world, Elizabeth embodies the idea of the monarchy. During his life spanning almost a century of world history, he also experienced the period of the Second World War and the coronavirus epidemic. Fifteen prime ministers from Churchill to Johnson have served under his rule, and he has witnessed the administration of fourteen American presidents from Truman to Biden. The vast majority of British people no longer even remember the world when he was not the head of the state and the British Commonwealth.

In his biography of the longest-reigning monarch in British history, Matthew Dennison meticulously traces the reign of II. Elizabeth's life in an age characterized by social changes on an unprecedented scale. Elegant in style, thorough and thoughtful in its judgments, this work tells the story of the joys and triumphs of an exceptional royal destiny as well as the disappointments and missteps. It weighs the achievements of the woman who is seen all over the world as an authentic representative of such classic - although less appreciated nowadays - virtues, such as a sense of duty, steadfastness, charity and stoic attitude.
