Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was the first lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945. She supported the government policies of her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the New Deal, and became an advocate for human rights. After her husband died in 1945, Eleanor remained an orator and politician, continuing to support the New Deal coalition. She worked for women's equality. Eleanor co-founded Freedom House and supported the founding of the United Nations. President Harry S. Truman called her "the first lady of the world."
