Product description
This novel is a love story. Viennese journalist Karl K. meets baroness Sidonie N. in the fall of 1913. They fall in love with each other, and after a short time together, they spend happy days in Sidonie's home in Janovice in June 1914. But the planned marriage fails even before the outbreak of war: the girl marries a young count.
In the summer of 1934, they meet again, this time in Switzerland, which appears to be a peaceful refuge in the middle of Europe drifting towards another war. The characters are twenty years older, and Karl K. already has the disease that will end their love together with the man's life.
The novel's main and secondary characters can be identified with real people, the events recalled mostly happened, and the two obelisks included in the title are still standing today. Nevertheless, László Márton's new novel gives the impression of a fantastic story: hardly noticeable, small fictions displace the facts and point to the ghostliness of the real historical background.
The landscapes described on the pages of Two Obelisks are made visible by Christian Thanhäuser's woodcuts.
