      On the ice, east of the Black Rock, there is a pile into which crippled children are thrown.

      That is why he is torn from everything: his family, the boy with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life are taken from him, and he has to make his way alone in a fundamentally different world, full of mysteries and dangers, which he did not even know existed.

      He is confronted with the fact that the world of Abeth is much more ancient and strange than he could have imagined. He realizes that his weaknesses are signs of a different kind of strength. And he learns how to defy the cruel laws of survival that have ruled his tribe's life since the beginning.

      Only in the deepest darkness do the stars shine.
