Product description
America was devastated by the economic crisis. Gangs, vandals, and the mentally ill are looting in the Rust Belts teeming with the unemployed and homeless. The young married couple, Stan and Charmaine, are still alive because they miraculously live in their preserved car, but their fate often depends on seconds. One day, the news comes as salvation: they are looking for volunteers for the city of Consilience, the Pozitron Project. Project participants get a regular job and a comfortable, clean home - every other month. However, they have to spend the intervening periods as prisoners in the Pozitron prison, which is the heart of the city and the project, and their house is occupied by their newly released exchange partners, with whom they are strictly forbidden to come into contact - this is ensured by the Observation. At first, it doesn't seem like a big sacrifice in exchange for an orderly life, but when Charmaine breaks the rules and begins a passionate relationship with her fellow shifter, a chain of disturbing events begins, and sooner or later they are forced to ask the question of what is really going on behind the walls of Consilience and the prison.
In Margaret Atwood's dystopia written in 2015, in addition to the problems of social responsibility and joint survival, individual existence comes to the fore, especially questions of passion: how far can one go in possessing another without losing oneself?
"They themselves, the future Positron designers - are real heroes! They decided to take the risk, appeal to the better half of human nature, explore unknown areas of the psyche. They are like the pioneers of old, they break the way, make room for the future: to the future, which is safer, richer, and generally better because of them. Posterity will remember them with reverential respect. It's bullshit. Stan has never heard so much bullshit in his life. On the other hand, he kind of wants to believe it."
