In addition to Africa, rhinoceroses native to South and Southeast Asia are threatened with extinction. As a result of poaching, the wild populations have been greatly reduced: there are only half a hundred specimens of the Javan rhinoceros left, the number of Sumatran rhinoceros is estimated at 300, and there are approximately 2,500 individuals of each species of the Indian and African narrow-mouthed rhinoceros living in the wild. In terms of chances of survival, perhaps the African wide-mouthed rhinoceros has the best chance: more than 12,000 of them live in the wild. Natural populations are increasingly isolated from each other and fight their hopeless battle for survival.
