"There are stories that form a complete whole as they are. You don't need to adjust anything about them. My story is like that. Before I retired to the forest, I didn't think that my life would ever come together as a complete whole. I'm not excited by the story, but what lies behind it. Because the essential things can only be found within. If you don't follow what comes from within, you will lose more and more of yourself on the path you are on, and by the time you reach the end of the path, nothing will be left of it, which you were."
Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about identity, and the lack of it. This collection of short stories focuses on the issue of identity. Willingly or unwillingly, the characters of the stories identify or are unable to identify with their fate, their gender, their work, the tasks and challenges imposed on them, their nation, they feel at home where they are, or they run away from themselves. The short stories take place in Hungary or somewhere in Europe.
The fate of the ancients is intertwined with the defining events, world of ideas and social phenomena of the given era. The "behind the scenes" of the book include terrorist attacks, the pandemic, loneliness, the digital space, the inhumanity of the communist dictatorship, the horror of a dystopian world. The history of the present largely determines the freedom of movement of the long, but at the same time, their sense of identity, or rather the lack of it, offers them countless individual choices.
