Product description
In Moscow, at an anti-corruption demonstration, the police detains Ánya. The court sentences him to ten days in prison in a hearing lasting barely fifteen minutes. Ánya finds herself behind bars for the first time in her life. He is taken to the detention center where, according to his assumption, only hooligans and rioters, crooks and thieves sit. But to her greatest surprise, cell number three is full of young women like her, who were brought here for such ridiculously insignificant offenses as, for example, driving without a license. The monotonous prison days are endlessly long, and while waiting for their release, the women play, dream, and talk, sharing with each other the sometimes not so ordinary secrets of their seemingly ordinary lives. The detention center is a closed and stuffy world, furnished according to strict rules, where, however, strange and creepy things start to happen around Ánya, who recalls her whole life up to that point, her childhood in a small town, her rebellious teenage years, her dormitory friendships and messy loves. It's up to you to find out: it's all real, or just a figment of your troubled imagination.
Kira Jarmis is Alexei Navalny's press secretary. Zárka is his first novel.
"Centuries and generations change, but in Russia books about prison and misery, freedom and slavery are still being published, as if the hundred years had never happened. A very timely book was born again. Only the text is much more alive than Gorky's. "
