Twelve-year-old Marci is a smart, but somewhat scattered boy, a substitute and then a drop-in member of their school's small team preparing for a nature study and conservation competition, which made it all the way to the national finals. The final will be held in Marian Austria, and things turn out so that they have to take Marci's five-year-old brother, Jancsi, with them, who really wants to finally have his own pet.

This causes some complications in the course of the story - as well as the fact that, due to an unfortunate misunderstanding, the team is forced to set off with a rickety borrowed van. They don't even get far, they spend the night in a dark forest, and more adventures await them, even more crazy than crazy, and more exciting than exciting - well, and an unexpected meeting with the "specific lynx"...
