The book tells the story of our lives from conception to birth: from the first simple cell division to the moment after nine months, when we as full-grown children struggle through a narrow opening.
In the beginning, we were a single tiny cell, which then split into two. The two cells became four. Then eight. It will be sixteen. The outline of a human body soon appears. A backbone. A heart that begins to beat. Then the lungs, eyes, and mouth appear. And the brain. In a few months, we magically transform from a cluster of cells into an organism that breathes, eats and thinks. How is it possible? Since the discovery of the DNA molecule, biology has been developing at a dizzying pace, and scientists are able to answer questions that previously seemed impossible. How do cells know to make hearts and not hands or ears? How is it possible that identical twins have the same genes but different fingerprints? And what do we have in common with the vinegar fly?
