Translated by ÉVA DOBOS, with an afterword by LÁSZLÓ POTOZKY
Juan Marsé, the great Spanish writer, is no longer unknown to Hungarian readers. His latest novel, The Calligraphy of Dreams, is a sort of summation and culmination of the author's many oeuvres, interwoven with already familiar motifs. This novel also takes place in the Barcelona of the first years of the Franco era, in the world of little people living around Park Güell, Andalusian immigrants, street kids kicking rag balls, prostitutes in Chinatown, gypsies and anointed priests, where the forbidden memory of the republic is still alive.
Through the eyes of Ringo, the sensitive adolescent boy, we see the residents of the neighborhood, the guests of the pub, his father, the Rat Slayer, the embittered former resistance fighter who can now only vent his anger on "the blue rats", and the love-hungry, aging Mrs. Mir's romance with Mr. Alonso , with the former football player. The feeling of defeat, fear and helplessness settles on everything, and even the adolescent love for Violeta, which captivates his senses, turns into a strange, half-hearted story. Ringo tries to right the wrong when he dropped an important letter down the drain one drunken night. But in this world full of lies, nothing is what it seems, and even the one thing that seemed beautiful and pure and caused so much heartache for the teenage boy will be dirty in retrospect.
This is Juan Marsé's most autobiographical novel; the former jeweler's apprentice no longer disguises the teenager here, as in his other novels, and here he confesses for the first time about the story of his adoption.
