Product description
"I'm just lying on the bed and for the first time in my life I'm thinking about how much I want to live. My heart stops with each bomb blast. I'm clinging to the minutes, the seconds. I've never been so close to death."
An important, shocking, but ultimately hopeful contemporary document about the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, from the diary entries of a Ukrainian girl.
Jeva Szkaliecka's story begins on her twelfth birthday in Kharkiv, the city where she has lived with her grandmother since childhood. Ten days later, the happy, balanced life he had known until then, with bowling, painting and special classes, falls to pieces. On February 24, 2022, his city is unexpectedly attacked as Russia launches its invasion of Ukraine. Jeva begins to write her diary in the basement, detailing the bomb attacks they experienced while hiding underground and their desperate journey west, away from the conflict raging around them.
Jeva wants to get her former life back, she wants to hear birds chirping and rain instead of the bombing, but their apartment is bombed, she can only exchange short messages with her classmates, and the new acquaintances and friendships can only last until they run away. After constant losses, endless train rides and time spent in an overcrowded refugee center in western Ukraine, Jeva and her beloved grandmother finally find refuge in Dublin.
There he bravely starts a new life, hoping to return home one day.
