Sándor Jászberényi's second book, The Most Beautiful Night of the Soul, not only won the Libri literary award, but also earned him the recognition of the Hungarian Hemingway by the reading public. For The Crow King and fourteen other stories, he returned home from the battlefields of the Middle East to tell us about death and birth, friendship and letting go, the loneliness of marriage, and childhood that avenges itself with the hard, knocking language of minimal prose and the very eloquent silence of men. But the real front lines, as in earlier Eastern stories, are not now in the desert, on barren plateaus, in bombed-out cities, and not two armies are facing each other. The battle is still going on for the souls of the characters, good and evil are fighting for them, or if you like, God and Satan or the Crow King.
    Tamás Kötter

Sándor Jászberényi was born in 1980 in Sopron. He studied Hungarian, cultural organization, Arabic, philosophy and aesthetics at ELTE, and graduated with a degree in Hungarian-cultural organization. Since 2006, he has been living in Egypt with more or less interruptions. Among other things, he reported on the conflict in Darfur, the separatist movements in Yemen, the 2009 Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip, the leprosy and tuberculosis epidemic in Nigeria, the 2011 Egyptian revolution and the Libyan civil war. Two of his books were published by Kalligram: The Devil is a Black Dog and Other Stories (2013). The Most Beautiful Night of the Soul (2017)
Already Jászberény's first volume of short stories, Az ördög a black dog, had a serious international career. Released in USA, UK, India, France, Serbia. The author was nominated for Kirkus and Pen awards. Jászberényi won the Libri professional prize with his second book of short stories, A leukle splendist nachtjaja, the book was also published in the United States and India, and is currently being translated into French, Urdu and German. His critics say that he does not continue the Hungarian or Central European prose tradition in the least, and that he stands out radically from the ranks of Hungarian fiction writers. Tibor Fischer wrote about this in the Guardian: "In the context of Hungarian literature, Jászberényi is a dangerous heretic, a beast wielding a lead stick."
