Product description
Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (1818-1883), the great figure of the "golden age" of Russian culture, created his "ancients" between 1877 and 1882, which he called Senilia, works of old age. This cycle of prose poems has been a gem of Russian literature ever since, but it was last published in our country more than half a century ago.
Unforgettable portraits of the coachman mourning his wife, or of Yegoruska, the "honest soul" who forgives even being innocently hanged, of bad poets and evil critics; visions of the muse, the approach of death, the end of the world. At the incantation, "The great Pan is risen!", an army of nymphs, dryads and Bacchantes populates the forest, an old line of poetry about the rose evokes first love, sweet female voices are heard from the flowery expanse of the "azure world". Transience and the memory of beauty, discouragement and joy of life, desire and renunciation, love and friendship, life and death, turmoil and calm - all the questions of a human life are swirling in the perfectly composed and broken melodies of these poems.
After fifty-four years, Senilia is now presented to the public in a new translation.
