Product description
Transylvanian chancellor Miklós Bethlen (1642-1716) gradually became an iconic figure of early modern Transylvanian politics and a canonized author of old Hungarian literature during the last century. He was a great statesman, one of the most outstanding representatives of Hungarian autobiographical literature, possessor of enormous education, well-versed in the current ideas of his time at a high level, and a religious and philosophical thinker with an individual character. He operated an extremely extensive network of European contacts and was an active shaper of the politics of his time for a long time. A careful, circumspect real politician became an open rebel, an opponent of the Habsburg government. He spent the last part of his life in captivity. This study volume is based on the lectures of the conference organized at Eötvös Loránd University for the 300th anniversary of Miklós Bethlen's death. The authors of the book - representatives of different disciplines: history, local history, literary history, philosophy, mental history, cultural history - illuminate each other's investigations and create a modern picture of Miklós Bethlen and his time.
