Ingredients: Turmeric 100%
Turmeric - reduces inflammation, inhibits tumor formation
Turmeric is also used in India for wound healing and as a tea to treat respiratory problems. Modern medicine confirms the positive physiological effects of the spice, mostly in connection with the compound curcumin, which is a powerful antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin alleviates joint inflammation, pain caused by injuries and dental procedures, and many researches are currently investigating its application possibilities in the treatment of heart diseases, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.
The English name "turmeric" is said to originate from the Latin term terra merita, the merit of the earth. Hindus highly respect turmeric and associate it with fertility.
CULTIVATION
Turmeric is a robust, bright and deep yellow rhizome, the size and shape of ginger and prefers hot tropical climates. India is the number one country in the world, where it is produced, consumed and exported in extreme quantities.
Pieces of the previous year's rootstock are planted and the 1-meter-tall long-stemmed plant develops from it. In about 9 months, the trunk system emerges from the ground, indicating that it is ripe. The trunk is boiled, peeled, dried for a week and then graded. Almost the entire crop is ground and put on the market in powder form.
AROMA AND FLAVOR
Turmeric has a peppery aroma with a slight woody flavor. Its warm, musky flavor has a slightly bitter aftertaste.
KITCHEN USE
When a recipe calls for saffron, we often substitute turmeric. Mistakenly. It does not replace saffron, but it is still used in Indian cuisine. They put it in dishes where the color is important and not the taste, so that they can refer to it as saffron, while the price of saffron is much higher.
Perhaps it is valuable as an element of curries, here its taste and aroma are also highly valued.
It is used in chutneys, pickles and many Indian rice dishes, but in North Africa it is often used to season lamb and vegetables.
MEDICAL AND OTHER USES
Because of its aroma, it is a mild digestive aid and is mainly used to treat liver problems and stomach ailments. I hear that it is effective against colds when boiled in sugar water. Individual use as a dye due to the vividness of its color. It plays a role as an edible dye in the food industry, e.g. in the coloring of mustards, liqueurs and butters.
STORAGE
It is recommended to buy in small quantities and store in an airtight glass, protected from light. When preparing turmeric with your own hands, it is recommended to use gloves, as it discolors your hands.
