The novel is the story of a great love: the beautiful Fermina has to choose between her two suitors, Florentino Ariza and doctor Juvenal Urbino - the agonizing love triangle lasts for almost fifty years before finally ending with a twist. Mystical events are common in this bygone world, the singing water cow usually appears on the river bank, and the most natural thing is that objects sometimes move out of place.
