Product description
Pianist, composer and conductor Francesco Lotoro was born in 1964 in Barletta, southern Italy. After obtaining his diploma, he studied at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest under, among others, Kornél Zempléni, László Almásy and Tamás Vásáry. For thirty years, he has been researching the musical works created in the concentration camps, and in addition to the more than 8,000 scores, he has collected 12,500 documents related to the musical life of the camps, 3,000 university publications, a dissertation on the music of the concentration camps, and a musical study. The Soá Foundation, which manages the archive of Steven Spielberg's interviews with 55,000 Holocaust survivors, offered him unlimited access to its archive and commissioned him to transcribe the scores held by the foundation.
He is the editor and performer of the 24-piece CD series KZ Musik, which contains 407 pieces of music acquired in captivity. He is currently working on the Thesaurus Musicae Concentrationariae encyclopedia, which organizes the data of the musical works acquired in the camps and their authors with the aim of completeness. This material forms the basis of the institution to be established in Lotoro's hometown, which will be the largest center in the world dedicated to the music created in the concentration camps. The Citadel of the Music of the Concentration Camps, which is being built on the empty eight thousand square meters of the former distillery in Barletta, will also house a museum, a library and a theater.
