For medicinal purposes, the upper part of the flowering, leafy shoot of the plant is used. The plant blooms in the summer months, and it is harvested in July-August. The herbal drug, which has a slightly salty taste, contains iridoid glycosides (verbenalin), caffeic acid derivatives, flavonoids and traces of essential oil. It is proven to be a good expectorant, immune booster, cough suppressant, and is used to treat upper respiratory tract catarrh. In folk medicine, it was used to alleviate respiratory and digestive complaints, including liver and biliary disorders. The plant is known to be a good tonic and appetite enhancer.
