Product description
The meeting of reality and fiction: the world war, revolution and emigration, and then desperate attempts to return home. These are the representative topos of his life's work, which are now all included in the six narratives of György Ferdinandy's perhaps best-known and most acclaimed volume, The Story of My Love.
One of the last Mohicans of Western Hungarian literature, who left his homeland after the fall of the 1956 revolution, in this first volume, actually published in Hungary and now republished after thirty-three years, he describes his childhood years during the Second World War, the heavy-handed dictatorship, the October Revolution, and then it depicts the story of emigration to France and the archipelago, an unsuccessful first marriage, and a father paralyzed for life.
At the same time, the ordinary, the unsuccessful, the lost, the homeless, the impotent emigrant come to life in its pages - with all their fallibility, pain and frailty. The organizing element of the Ferdinandy universe is the self-exiled life presented in alienation and solitude. Using words taken from the criticism of the poet János Marno, we can follow the "lyrical film montage" of this.
Mostly shocking, sometimes tragicomic and ironic, but refreshingly readable and important work. And in it everything that György Ferdinandy writes over a lifetime: himself.
