Tell me where you live, I'll tell you who you are!
How did the ancient Romans reach their destination? Why did the citizens of the Habsburg Empire try to remove freshly painted house numbers en masse during the reign of Mária Theresa? How do the Nazis still haunt Germany's public spaces to this day, and what do the many Martin Luther King Jr. streets in the USA have in common? How do you find your way in Japan, where the majority of streets still have no names or numbers?
In everyday life, we take it as the most natural thing in the world to have an address, even though this was not always the case. In fact, this is not the case in many places. How do millions in Third World slums live without it, and what about the homeless in big cities? What is the history of addresses, and how do the names of our streets and squares weave through our lives? Everything is revealed in Deirdre Mask's fascinatingly exciting book.
