Somewhere on the edge of Eastern Europe, in the old, gray BesĽel, inspector Tyador Borlú is alerted to a dead body. The case of the victim, who appears to be an anonymous street girl, begins as a routine investigation, but soon becomes more and more complicated and leads to the other side of the extremely strange border zone, to the modern, wealthy Ul Qoma. In the two cities, where even the most ordinary details of life are regulated by strange regulations and order is overseen by an invisible power, more and more interest groups are trying to make Borlú's work impossible. However, the inspector investigates the mystery of the nameless girl and a forbidden myth with unwavering determination, despite the efforts of nationalist groups and Pitian criminals... or whatever is hidden in the crevices between the two cities.

The reader is holding one of China Miéville's most important works, which won the Hugo, Arthur C. Clarke, World Fantasy and Locus awards after its publication, and in 2018 it was adapted for the BBC Two series starring David Morrissey.
